Lungo il Po

The project involved the spatial reconfiguration of a 1960s apartment overlooking the Po River and the Turin hills, where the client’s primary request was to maximize the floor space and the use of the living area.

The demolition work and the new spatial layout were designed to highlight the view of the river and the hill through the large windows as soon as visitors enter. The living area spans the entire available frontage and features a flexible extension. It is a flexible space that can be adapted by closing polycarbonate panels, which can create a more private area when needed, configurable as an extra bedroom.

Lowering the ceiling not only conceals the HVAC systems but also creates a new open space facing the living room—an open area that houses seating and functional storage elements below, as well as a kitchen with an island that takes center stage in one corner of the space. The difference in ceiling height between the circulation area and the living area enhances the proportions of the living space and clearly distinguishes the service areas from the living areas.

A full-height door leads to the sleeping area, where the master bedroom with an en suite bathroom, the main bathroom, and the children’s bedroom are arranged along a hallway. The hallway does not have a closed end but curves toward the extension of the living area, creating a fluid, circular flow despite the clear division of the spaces. Although the entryway is located in the heart of the apartment, it receives natural light through a translucent wall situated near the kitchen island. The rooms feature walk-in closets to maximize the available space inside them.

The finishing materials evoke nature, such as the raw earth plaster in the living area and the travertine in the kitchen. The focus is on warm, earthy tones such as natural concrete, reclaimed wood flooring, and brick red.
