In a small town such as Erbusco, the construction of a new school building represents an unmissable opportunity for the entire community. For this reason, the primary objective of this design proposal is to integrate the school spaces with those serving the city within an organic and recognisable design, making the school an urban landmark capable of fostering social interaction.
Architecture can be a source of learning, an opportunity to communicate ideas about beauty and the relationship between the natural and built environment. Therefore, the new middle school in Erbusco was conceived not only as a distinctive, attractive and enduring feature, but also as an element capable of stimulating the cognitive and expressive abilities of its students.
The project first and foremost stems from meeting the criteria required by the competition brief:
feasibility is expressed through the study of a simple, modular structure to which easily executed and implemented construction technologies can be applied.
Design quality is expressed through a careful study of circulation flows, an easily navigable internal layout, particular attention to the integration into the landscape, the specific connection between the new building and the primary school, and the relationship between the building and the city.
The technological, performance and functional aspects are expressed through the use of dry construction technologies, which facilitate high-quality performance and rapid execution. Cost reduction is combined with the use of natural materials and the integrated design of the building-services system, in compliance with the Minimum Environmental Criteria.
Originality is expressed through the distinctive architectural form, the unconventional use of certain spaces such as the roof, the multiplicity of connections, and the inherent multifunctionality of spaces such as the civic centre.
