In the prestigious setting of Turin’s Torre Littoria, R3architetti, together with Baietto Battiato Bianco, designed a number of bespoke high-end interiors.
In particular, the staircase/bookcase stems from the desire to transform a technical and necessary element, connecting the different levels of the home, into a true architectural device capable of defining the domestic space. The staircase is therefore not conceived as a purely functional element, but as a sculptural and inhabitable presence, positioned at the centre of the relationship between the different spaces and capable of establishing a new perception of the interior.
The intervention is based on the contrast and balance between two main materials: natural wood, used for the steps and the more tactile surfaces, and dark Fenix, which forms the structure, the bookcase and the vertical balustrade system. The combination of the warm tones of the wood and the chromatic depth of black creates a contemporary, essential yet welcoming language, in continuity with the herringbone timber flooring.
The final result is a contemporary interior characterised by an essential yet highly distinctive language. The black structure introduces depth, rhythm and verticality, while the wood provides warmth and a sense of domestic continuity. Within this balance between rigor and materiality, solids and voids, function and composition, the staircase becomes the focal point of the entire project, transforming from a simple vertical connection into a true piece of interior architecture.
