A late nineteenth-century home, defined by thick masonry walls and vaulted ceilings, where the patina of time is rediscovered and celebrated rather than concealed. Here, the passage of time is not erased but embraced as an essential part of the architecture. A solid white volume houses the service core, while a lightweight steel structure supports a small sleeping loft. Hidden behind an ochre velvet curtain, the bed becomes an intimate and secluded retreat, where the softness of the fabric contrasts with the solidity of the historic masonry. These contemporary interventions are carefully integrated into the historic shell, creating a respectful dialogue between past and present and allowing the existing architecture to tell its own story. . . . Design, therefore storytelling. A space should be able to tell a story. Narrative is an intrinsic characteristic of every place. Architecture is the natural outcome of a design process conceived as the expression of an identity, whether existing or newly created. Living spaces should convey a unified and coherent story. To narrate a space means to understand it. This process begins the very moment a pencil draws its first lines on a blank sheet of paper. R3 Founded in 2015 through the collaboration of Marco Pippione, Alexandru Popescu, Matteo Restagno, and Gian Nicola Ricci, R3 was born from a shared experience at the Politecnico di Torino. Having met as university classmates in classroom R3, they established their first temporary studio, creating within just 13 square meters a light and flexible structure that became the manifesto of their architectural vision. The assimilation of place, functional devices, the use of vertical dimensions, the study of flows and circulation paths, the materiality of finishes, harmonious contrasts, and the concept of architecture within architecture are the core principles around which their projects revolve. . . . The Cascina Nuova study hall in Borgaro, the result of a design competition won in 2020, was conceived as an opportunity to redefine the access to the complex and to formally connect the various activities that revolve around it through a coherent architectural language. The attic space was refurbished through the introduction of a new thermal insulation system and a continuous glazed façade, enhancing natural light and improving the overall spatial quality. The main challenge of the construction process was working beneath the existing roof covering, addressed by implementing a true “box within a box” solution. Automated access control, a high-performance building envelope, and the use of heat pumps integrated with a photovoltaic system contribute to creating an efficient, contemporary, and high-performing study environment. . . .
