The project redesigns a portion of an apartment within a 1970s residential building in Turin. In that era, apartment layouts featured a sharp separation between the kitchen and the living area. The new intervention creates greater spatial fluidity, enhancing the flow of natural light coming from the large, east-facing windows.
The preexisting partition wall has been replaced by a lightweight functional element that opens up the spaces while filtering them. This filter is formed by a white metal structure that supports a bookshelf at the top. The 4mm-thick sheet metal shelves create the illusion of books floating in mid-air.
The back of the bookshelf is made of transparent polycarbonate to allow light to pass through. On one side, the structure folds downward, supporting a wooden volume that serves as an additional workspace for the kitchen behind it, as well as an open storage unit facing the living room. At floor level, the only visual connection between the living room and the kitchen is the table, positioned astride the two spaces along the centerline of the “portal” framed by the bookshelf.
