Lago Maggiore

The issue of restoring this building necessarily requires an open engagement with the fragments of a legacy—a historical one that is, in some respects, controversial, difficult to interpret, and not easily identifiable today for its integration into the transformation and reuse of the architecture. However, it is important to recognize, within the architectural complex, the compositional qualities of an articulation of spaces and volumes that perhaps deserve the greatest attention—and may even be more significant than the customary preservation of historical features and the restoration of the existing architecture.
It is within this context that the proposal seeks to fit, where the architectural semantics of the existing house relate to a site—that of the lake—of great scenic value, now established in its precious variety of native tree species, of unquestionable environmental value.
For these reasons, the design process begins by recognizing those values—not always evident—but to be sought within the fabric of a complex, heterogeneous tapestry, yet useful for informing architectural choices and the project’s decisions.
An architectural design that is also a complex, multifaceted landscape, comprising multiple structures, with exterior spaces for exclusive use, and views that always reveal the presence of the lake. The ends of the wings that extend toward the lake act as “viewfinders” that frame the landscape and feature private terraces and loggias.
